Duncan Africa Guitars

I’m honoured to say that alongside working on my own custom guitar builds I am now the pioneering UK importer/retailer for Duncan Africa Society & Guitar Co. Established and overseen by Canadian luthier Jay Duncan, formerly of Larrivée, Duncan Africa is a brilliant NGO with a Gospel-hearted ethos that builds quality guitars by hand in Uganda, where the team is lead by head-luthier, Simon Adyaka.

I feel both proud and humbled to play a part in a mission that is daily helping disadvantaged young men and women from the streets of Uganda emerge as skilled workers in the Suubi Trade Workshop. Their training and employment sees them progress from poverty to dignity as they provide for themselves and their families.

Duncan Africa has three classic inspired designs – The Jubilee (Dreadnought), Selah (OM) and Pearl (Parlour). All models are available in either Standard or Artisan specification. Duncan Africa uses some of the best woods available including: Canadian Sitka and Engelmann Spruce, Canadian Maple and Red Cedar, African Wenge, Mugavu, Ebony and Mahogany, and East Indian Rosewood.  

At no extra cost the models, woods and specs can be fully custom ordered to the individual’s requirements and I really enjoy working alongside prospective buyers to help them navigate the process – to build each person their ideal instrument. There is also a variety of optional custom inlays to choose from. Once ordered, the guitar is made and is delivered 6-9 months later. 

The cost of a Duncan Africa guitar in the UK ranges between £1400 and £2500 (including taxes) depending on specification. Fitted pickup systems and cases are also available. 

By offering Duncan Africa guitars I am not only able to practically support and work with a great charity, we are also able to offer bespoke hand-built instruments to clients whose budgets aren’t able to stretch to a UK luthier build.
